February 8-9: CANADIAN BIRKEBEINER SKI FESTIVAL/NORDIC SKI FAIR
|
Celebrate the challenge and bring the entire family to Canada’s premiere Cross Country Ski Festival. The Birkebeiner is the largest classic cross-county ski event in North America! The activities take place in the Cooking Lake/Blackfoot Recreation Area and are open to competitors of all ages and abilities. Kick off the weekend by exploring the Nordic Fair, from Noon until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 8th. The Nordic Fair is located at Festival Place, 100 Festival Way in Sherwood Park. The celebration of events begins with the Opening Ceremonies at noon on February 8 and continues with displays of Nordic and ski waxing tips and equipment and bib pick up for the skiers.
On Saturday, February 9, the ski events, ranging from 2.5 to 55 km, take place at the Cooking Lake/Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area and are open to participants of all ages and abilities. The 33 km and 55 km events start at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village and end at the Cooking Lake Blackfoot. The Festival tent and the 2.5 km, 5 km and 13 km events are all hosted at the Waskehegan area. There is no parking on-site. Plan to arrive early and park at the well-marked parking lot near Uncas School . Take the free shuttle bus to the site.
Celebrate the successes of skiers and hear the tales of their trials and adventures at the Vikings' Feast on Saturday evening.
